Not without reason are numerous feature films, novels and documentaries of the fascinating and at the same time puzzling personality of Ludwig. His legendary life is a myth full of puzzles and revelations, but also full of romance and fantasy, providing enough material for a touching and extremely exciting musical.
The retreat of Ludwig from the warlike world of his time into the sensual romantic fairytale world of his castles tells a story of fear and flight from the imperfections of politics, from the intrigues of influential politicians, from the machinations of the lobbyists and from the despair of the inevitability of war, Suffering and destruction. Rescue sought Ludwig in the love for the Empress Elisabeth (“Sissi”), in the arts and the music and in the dream worlds of his numerous castles.

The life of Ludwig is shown as an inner struggle between the hope of a peaceful society oriented to the arts and nature, and a reality that mercilessly opposes this utopia.
The musical is about the wrestling of the adult king around the gloomy, pure world-picture of his childhood and the absolutely contrary, relentless reality. In this sense, the musical is a deep inner feeling of many people and makes Ludwig² one of the most emotional and moving musical ever written! In 2005, the celebrated world premiere of the work was held at the Füssen Festspielhaus, and in over two years, it attracted more than 350,000 enthusiastic spectators. Now the work finally returns to the original location – unique and only for 3 weeks!

The castles tour should begin with the smaller of the two castles – Hohenschwangau Castle. From the ticket center you follow the well-signposted path to Hohenschwangau Castle and enjoy magnificent views of the Allgäu mountains.

The Hohenschwangau castle was created in its current form as a neo-gothic residential castle from the ruins of the castle Schwanstein, which King Maximilian II acquired in the 30s of the 19th century. Until his death in 1864, he lived together with his family in the castle, so that his son fairytale king Ludwig II grew up here almost.

After a visit to Hohenschwangau Castle, with more than 90 artful paintings showing motifs from the worlds of legends and fairy tales as well as the history of the building, the snow-covered forests lead up to Neuschwanstein Castle, which reminds of a medieval castle from the outside .

In the rooms and halls of the castle, visitors will be delighted with countless art treasures, precious furniture, golden decor and an impressive technique that was ahead of their time. Numerous paintings as well as wall and ceiling paintings take you into the world of legends and fairy tales, for which King Ludwig II, who created Neuschwanstein as his private retreat, had a great fascination.

Combine the visit of the castles with a small hike, a horse-drawn sleigh ride or a gondola ride with the Tegelbergbahn and visit one of the numerous huts such as the Rohrkopfhütte, the mountain guesthouse Bleckenau.

After this romantic, imposing but also exhausting excursion, you will return to your hotel “Schlosskrone”, where you can relax in the castle sauna or have a massage pampered.

A round end of the day at the castles is a dinner in the Bavarian restaurant “Himmelsstube” or in the Italian Ristorante “Chili”. Here you will find everything your heart desires. Especially the dessert creations from the confectionery let hearts beat faster.
